TSCC:  Search Tips

Forming your search criteria:
You can perform detailed query searches for those documents containing all of the words in your query.   Simply enter your criteria into any of the fields located on our search form and click .  Your criteria can consist of alphanumeric text, and may be preceded with and/or followed by a wild card character.

For example, let's say you're searching for any citations that include "Missile" in its abstract.  You would enter the following:

figure 1

Note a wild card character, an asterisk in this case, is used to indicate that you would like any abstract that includes the word "Missile".

In addition to the standard searching options discussed above, Keyword Searches are available on any fields that displays this symbol:  Keyword Search

A Keyword Search is simply a search that will look for all records that include your search criteria within that field.  There is no need to add wild card characters.   Each word that is separated by spaces is considered as additional criteria.   You have the option to specify an "AND" or "OR" type of search.   Let's look at the following text entered within a Keyword Search field:

DoD Spending Projections

Because an "OR" search is the default, this would create a query that looks for any records that have the words "DoD" OR "Spending" OR "Projections" within that field.   Therefore, records that have "DoD" but not "Projections" will still be included.  If the "AND" option is selected, then it will look for any records that have the words "DoD" AND "Spending" AND "Projections" within that field.   This is especially helpful when searching for more than one author.  And the reason why the Author field is a Keyword Search field.

Wildcard characters can be included in your search criteria to represent any character in a string.  The string can consist of these characters:
Wildcard
Meaning
%
Any string of zero or more characters
*
Any string of zero or more characters
_ (underscore)
Any single character

Extra Tips!
Be specific as possible
Use as many words as you can think of to narrow your search.  Include wild card characters only when needed.
Enter phrases of words
Use phrases of words that are commonly used.  For instance, instead of searching for "processes" use the phrase "manufacturing processes".  (And don't forget to include the wild cards!).
